I recommend you to use Acronis True Image for that. It will make an image of your data and store it on DVDs. True Image will allow you to restore your data anytime you want. Learn more about True Image here: http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/

Sounds like 4 single sided DVD-+Rs would manage it. Less if you use True Image
As you can buy DVD-R blanks for about 20 Cents a piece, that is a cheap way to go. Be sure you verify the copies!!!

Use Nero backup, it will allow you to compress data on Cd's. If you don't have Nero you can download a trial version that you can use to back up.

4 single layer DVD5 discs or two dual layer DVD9 discs, and if you had a portable USB hard drive over 17GB you could just use that instead.

Dual Layer discs hold 8.5 GB so you could put it on 2 or 3 of those. I got an external hard drive to back up my 60GB mp3 collection.

i would suggest using an external hard drive. buy one if you dont already own one.

then, boot up using a "live" cd like BartPE or Knoppix if you know any linux stuff
1)go to http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/
on any windows machine, doesnt have to be your own,'
follow the directions there, which will include burning a CD

2) boot up from that CD

3) connect external hard drive (via usb/firewire)

4) navigate to the files in question, and copy/paste them to the new external hard drive

5) repeate if necessary

Edit: when you first buy the external hard drive, it will have to be formated to NTFS or FAT 16/32 before you can use it. consult the drive's instructions

however, if your machine is bootable,
you can skip the live cd instructions, boot up normally, and use the external drive as described

after you recover all your data, i would suggest re-installing windows, and reformating your hard-drive,
this usally fixes all software bugs, including the ones you described.

If you have a DVD burner that will take 11 GIG templates, then less than 2. But if it is 8 gig, then 3 Discs, if it has a 4 GIG limit, 6 etc
