Also, when a hardrive crashes,(it’s happened twice to me so far) where should I have the backup to use when it happens again. Some say to have it on a partition of your hardrive but doesn’t that partition also go ka-putt too? How do I learn the workings of a computer so I can better understand the technical aspects of it?

Are you trying to clean up your Windows XP registry? This article is intended to give you an overview of what “cleaning your registry” would entail. To be specific, I will go over how to check for errors within the registry files, instructions on backing up a registry, and how to fix some of the errors you might find.

1: Look For Error – Empty Registry Keys

Microsoft has been nice enough to include a registry viewer within Windows XP. They did not get to original with the name, it is simply known as RegEdit. Here is the easiest way to access it:

Start -> Run -> Type Regedit and hit enter

You should now see the registry editor on your screen. If you are not familiar with how it works or how to edit your registry, you should contemplate using third party software that will do it for you.

You should be extremely careful about what software you are using. Since most people who utilize these forms are software are not experts and may already be having problems with their windows registry, people who create malicious software like to disguise them as windows registry cleaners. If you do your research and find a good one though, it will do what it is intended and will scan your registry and show you the errors it is finding.

2: Backup your registry!

Windows XP has a great little handy tool. It is called the Windows System Restore. The way it works is that it will take your computer back to a certain day and time of your choosing. Naturally, the Windows Restore will do it once everyday. However, it is a good idea to manually place a Restore Point as well just before altering any of your registries.

You can do this by doing the following:

Click Start -> Help and Support -> Click on “Create a new restore point” button

You will be asked a few questions, for example, the name, and description. It is a good idea to fill all of it out for later use.

3: Repair, correct, and delete parts of your Windows Registry

The Windows XP Registry now needs to have some alterations made. The software you used should have let you know what you need to do. You have your backup and are ready to what you need to do to make your computer run more smoothly. You should go ahead and delete the items that the software tells you to. Remember, you have a backup if need be.

The software you utilized, if it is any good, should tell you which items need to be left alone and which ones should be altered. Remember, if something looks to be important; do not touch it, regardless of what the registry cleaning software told you to do. You are better off leaving something that does not need to be there in the registry than you are removing something that was vital to the operating system.

Once you have made all the corrections, you should reboot your computer. It will be the first big test to see if everything is good with your computer. It is not uncommon to see some new text display when you boot up for the first time as windows goes through the registry. You should read it and see if it can be determined that something was deleted that should not have been.

If you run into any major problems, you should utilize your system restore backup to bring your computer back to where it was prior to making the changes in your registry.

Above instruction shows you how to edit the registry manually. The better thing is, there are some windows registry cleanup tools available to download for FREE . From my experience, only fews are working with the very good results. Come to see the filtered list of windows registry clean up tools at

Scan Windows Registry .

Traditional methods of backup like optical or tape backup are very effective but they need capital to setup and staff to operate them. An online backup is free of such problems. Online backup provider offers software, which has to be installed on the computer. This allows the user to select the backup files, takes care of Internet connection, encrypts and compresses the data and transfers it through the Internet to a secure remote location. The prominent advantage of using online backup is the disaster recovery offered by offsite storage and is easy to use. Another advantage is that online backup can be done even at odd hours because the providers work round the clock, 24×7. Most importantly, online backups decrease the amount of media needed to keep track of, since much of the backup storage is offloaded to the offsite storage. A person need not purchase new equipment and there are no ongoing media costs, staff costs and so on. The running costs are also meager. Setup and installation of the software is quite simple and can to be downloaded in a matter of a few minutes. Data recovery is also very fast since the user need not search for the right tape or wait for the staff to recover the lost data. Online backup is automatically completed so that after the process is over, the backed up files can be accessed by anyone (with permission), thus enabling file sharing with traveling colleagues, clients or home PCs.

But the limitations of online backup are that it fully depends on Internet connections and therefore requires permanent broadband connection to handle significantly large volumes. Also, the initial backup will take a long time because a complete copy of the data must be encrypted, compressed and copied. Once initial backup is complete, subsequent backups will only backup the files that have been changed, making the process faster. Since online backup companies compress the data and do only incremental backup, it may sometimes decrease the value of the backup and increase the restoration time.

Though a third party holds the invaluable data in online backup, in reality, they are quite safe and secure because before being transferred, the backup data is encrypted to a military grade -128 bit level. Therefore it is impossible for anyone to intersect or decrypt the data except for the user.

The data storage center is also reliably secure, which has invariably class- A facilities equipped with fire suppression, security cameras, personal access control, electricity generators, mirroring techniques and what not. In fact, the storage premises are far more secure than the client’s own premises. Online backups can be a valuable addition to the data protection but cannot be a replacement for manual, onsite backup.

When troubleshooting Windows XP, there are two possibilities as to where the problem may be.This problem may be with Windows XP or it may very well be a hardware problem. In either case, the best way to recover from this is to have an XP Recovery Kit at the ready.

This kit will enable you to get your computer up and running in minutes rather than hours. This kit consists of backups of your entire hard drive. You will save yourself a heap of troubleshooting procedures that you would have to perform otherwise without this recovery kit.

To get right to the point in creating your own XP Recovery Kit, you will need disk imaging utility such as Drive Image by Powerquest and a backup medium such as a cdrom writer,a dvd writer, or a second hard drive.

There are two procedures you can perform to create an XP Recovery Kit.And these procedures can be use to create kits for other versions of Windows as well.Using a recordable medium is the first and using a second hard drive is the second method.

You also have the option of re-installing Windows XP as a form of recovery but this process takes time.Creating your XP recovery kit will require time as you make this kit but after this, you can quickly get any system running again just as if nothing went wrong.

To use cdroms or dvds, make sure your cd or dvd writer is functioning properly.Install and run Drive Image. We used Drive Image which cost $69.95 but you can also use such free or trial versions of drive imaging software.

One good software is the Back-Up 2006 by Andy Shroebel at http://www.backupmaker.com which should perform the same tasks as Drive Image.

After running your imaging software, follow instructions to create an image of Drive C. You will have the option of choosing cdrom, dvd, or second hard drive to perform the image. You will also see the number of disks required to complete the process.

The Image software should reboot the computer and perform the backup. When using disks, you will need to remove and insert the cds as needed.Label the cdroms in order and put them in a safe and secure place.

When using a second hard drive, you will know to know how to install it on the ide cable.Formatting and partitioning the second must be done before it can be used.

Windows XP have a backup utility but Windows XP home edition will have to install it from the cdrom.Place the XP cd in the drive, open My Computer, and right click the CD Drive containing the XP cd.

Now click Open and you will see the contents of the cdrom. Click the ValueAdd folder, then the MSFT folder. Next click the NTBackup folder and click NTBACKUP to install the backup utility.

But the Windows XP utility will not record to cdroms or dvds but will only save the backup as a file. This is why its best to use Drive Image or a compatible software.

After completing your drive image by backing up Windows XP on cd, dvd, or second hard drive, you will not be so concerned should Windows XP freeze up and fail to load.

Simply reboot the computer and access your BIOS to let it know which medium to boot from.Save the change and place the cdrom or dvd one in the drive and reboot. If you used a second hard drive, simply reboot and that’s it.

Now don’t be tempted to wait until Windows XP fail and say you should have made that recovery kit.Take the time to make an image of your hard drive and be prepared for any failure brought on by Windows XP.

I am getting a new computer soon, and since most of my software was downloaded and registered online (no disk) I am concerned about how to best go about transferring the programs from my old computer to my new one. For example I tried making a copy of my FL Studio Program, and it worked…sort of. When I installed the disc into another computer it functioned, but was missing some key features that are supposed to be there. Here’s what I did. I opened Nero, selected burn data cd, browsed program files til I found the one labeled FL STUDIO, and then I opened it into Nero. As I said before, the burn was successful, it just didn’t contain everything that was originally included in the software. I need advice because I don’t have much longer with my old computer, and I have ALOT of software that I need to backup onto cd. I just want to know that the copy will contain everything I need to install the entire program on my new pc….or else i’m just wasting CD-R’s!! Thanks for your help!!
