It involves using integrated systems and takes a holistic approach across the entire organization, so information can be shared among all the aspects of the business.
Where I work now, manufacturing, finance, distribution, maintenance, and management all use different systems to track the process. They each work well for what they are designed to do, but they don’t talk to each other very well, and it is a real pain to get the right information to the right person at the right time.
We are moving to an enterprise wide technology, but it is very painful and expensive… to have one program that does all things for all people is a huge challenge – and we are likely to end up with a big dog that does not do anything for anybody.
Run that up your cost/benefit flagpole and see who salutes it.
